OSAKA — Two foreigners accused of graffitiing trains here were handed suspended prison sentences on Friday.

The Osaka District Court sentenced a 26-year-old Slovakian artist and a 26-year-old Hungarian college student to 2 1/2 years’ imprisonment, suspended for five years. The two were charged with destruction of property and trespassing.

According to the ruling, the two defendants sprayed graffiti on trains in their shed at Shin-Osaka Station on the Midosuji subway line on Sept. 4, and on subway cars in Ichikawa, Chiba Prefecture on Sept. 14.

Judge Takeshi Hashimoto said that the two defendants came to Japan specifically to carry out graffiti.
